I Wish I Was Athletic

By Colton M. Kuper

This is my story. Oh, by the way, my name is Taffy. I am a German Shpeard/Husky mix. My mother was a beautiful Alaskan Husky. Her name was Denali. My father was a strong, handsome German Shepard named Max.

One afternoon, on a bright sunny day in August, I was sitting on my porch trying to figure out why I ate so much for lunch, not being able to justify eating two enormous fried chickens, three greasy, delicious dog bones, and one pork chop I stole out of my neighbor’s garbage can. I decided to lie down with my master, Colton, to watch a game on the funny, lighted box my master called a TV. The game we were watching was a bunch of humans wearing big bubbles on their heads chasing each other, with a funny-shaped ball that was made out of the skin of cows.

The game was so exciting that my master found a smaller ball that was the same shape as the one used on TV, but this ball smelled like my master’s car seat. My master, Colton, started tossing the ball at the soccer field across the street from our house. This excited me and I started chasing the ball when Colton threw it. I got so good at chasing the ball, I was able to catch it before it hit the ground. I pretended that I was one of those funny, bubble-headed players from the TV.

All of the sudden a man came running up to my master. I almost bit him because I thought he was going to tackle Colton like those bubble-headed humans.

It turned out that the man worked for the company that the bubble-headed humans played for. This company was where humans learned to be teachers, doctors, scientists, and also learned to play that funny game. This place was called the University of Washington. The man wanted Colton and me to come to his company’s games, called “football games,” and play catch for all the people who came to watch the game. The team was looking for a young husky dog to be a “mascot” for the team because the mascot they had was old and tired, so she needed to rest.

The man picked us up for the game on Saturday. I was excited as a new pup with a bone. We arrived at the stadium and the man said to me, “Taffy, I would like you to meet our old mascot.” Imagine my surprise when a beautiful husky walked up to us. She had a purple and gold collar around her neck and a gold name tag with her name inscribed on it. The name was Denali, and I had once again found my mom!
