Dear Dad,
My favorite place in Alaska is the Kennicott Mine at Kennicott/ McCarthy. I like it a lot because it is fun to explore all the old buildings. The drive to Kennicott is very bad, because the road is filled with potholes and leftover railroad spikes. It is a very long drive!
The mine itself still contains copper ore. You can find lots of copper ore around the area that you can keep. Copper ore is contained in rock that is blue-gray and has copper threads running through. It is a pretty rock.
The buildings around the mine are old. They are red and while and built up on the rolling hills surrounded by mountains. In front of the Kennicott Glacier Lodge is a moraine, which is a special type of glacier that comes down from the mountains and looks like the tailings of a mine. Kennicott also has a footbridge that you must walk across to get to. You cant bring your car when you visit!
