Alaska Booksellers

Alaskans have a choice of bookstores that specialize in everything from Alaska Native culture to classics and bestsellers. Offering more than just books, most serve as a gathering place for poets, coffee lovers or theatergoers. In Bookstore Features you will find stories about the people and the personal vision which make each bookstore unique. In our Bookstore Guide we provide a comprehensive list of Alaskan Bookstores.

Bookstore Features

Borders
Anyone who visits Borders Bookstore regularly knows that on any night of the week something interesting is going on in the store. It might be live music in the cafe, a reading and book signing, a meeting of the local chess club, or a presentation on how to choose a puppy.

Cook Inlet Book Company
This bookstore specializes in regional books about Alaska and the polar regions. Their goal is to carry every book about Alaska.

Cyrano's Book Store
Jerry Harper and his wife Sandy, a former talk radio producer, moved to Anchorage from Seattle to open a little literary bookstore and café, and have seen their small store grow into what they call a "cultural mini-mall." With 11,000 books, many about Alaska, a theater and a bistro, this downtown Anchorage store provides an eclectic experience.

Homer Bookstore
The Homer Bookstore considers itself a "mirror of the community." "We let people tell us what they want to read; we don't tell them 'this is what there is to read,' " says part-owner Lee Post.

Old Harbor Books in Sitka
The store was founded in 1976 by a group of devoted book lovers, most of whom are still serving on the board. The people at the store make it a point to get involved in community issues.

Title Wave Books
In 1991, Julie Drake and Steve Lloyd started a small used bookstore in Anchorage. Since then, Title Wave has grown to become the largest independent bookstore in Alaska, and one of the biggest bookstores on the West Coast.

Mat-Su Valley Bookstores
Valley bookstores are finding their niche. Small shops offer new and used, rare and out-of-print titles.

Waldenbooks Northway Mall
When Sharon McClanahan, assistant manager of Northway Mall Waldenbooks, was conducting a book fair at Chugiak Elementary School, she realized that there was a great need for books in Spanish because of the Spanish Immersion Program at the school. As a result, the book store now regularly receives Spanish books.
