WORDS
By Anna Wichorek
Northern Lights ABC, Grade 4

Words can be sad
like a silhouette of solitude,
Soft like floating feathers.
Words are magical
like sparkling, twinkling
moonstars.
Some words are angry
like flaming, red fury-
powerful like a swift raging
river.
Words are hope
like a rainbow
gracefully arching in the sky.

TKO
By Ziggy Unzicker
Rogers Park, Grade 4

The referee, yeah, I know he
called on me
beads of perspiration roll down
my face.
My opponent? I’ll show him his
place!
Suddenly the butterflies wake,
my stomach feels queasy,
something I can’t take!
He lands a kick, right on the dot,
ooh, that hurts, my face feels hot!
A technicolor breeze
rolls in my face,
a blackout! Not light left,
not a trace
I give up and swallow my pride,
the best I can do
second place.
I shake his hand
and he shakes mine
The referee, yeah,
I know he called on me,
That’s hwy I’m going to
do better this time.

ODE TO SNOWBOARDING
By Blake Steenhoven
Lake Hood, Grade 6

My mind
racing as I slip into my bindings,
riding the chairlift
high above the ground.
The wind
blowing my hair freely
as I cruise down the hill.
Nerves twitch
but I’m addicted to adrenaline.
Nearing the jump,
heart pounding,
feeling the ground angle up
under my board,
Sailing, rising higher then ever.

HOW TO BE A SWAN
By Genevieve Carr
Lake Hood, Grade 4

Fly high.
Eat fish.
Wear white downy feathers.
Float in the pond
Lay yellow eggs.
Be beautiful!

HOW TO BE THE TREES
By Kelsey Saakvitne
O’Malley, Grade 6

To be the trees
You have to have long, bony arms.
You have to whine and sigh
All night long.
You have to claw
and bite the moon,
As if trying to bring it down,
And you have to slowly
dance in the wind.

GUITAR
By Grant Barras
Baxter, Grade 6

He played so well,
sitting next to me,
he played so well
strumming stings
that plucked my soul
he played so well
he made me think,
how can a man that good
be sitting next to me? I sat there
quietly flowing with his harmonies.

He glanced at me, tears blinding
as he kept playing, strumming,
his high pitch catching me-Ging!
I stayed
stunned
listening.

I wondered
why I couldn’t hear before
the guitar wasn’t my instrument
that man strumming melodies
reciting history
telling stories
he turned to me, whispered,
your turn, my son.

TESTING
By Shelby Werstlein
Muldoon, Grade 4

the test is a monster waiting
to eat my brain,
scratch paper is my shield,
my number 2 pencil my sword,
I will attack by filling in the bubbles
heavy and dark.

“Slaveship…”
By Thomas Savoini
Kinkaid, Grade 5

Slaveship
Graveship
Feel the cold air hip
Slaveship
Hateship
Glumness in my grip
Slaveship
Deathship
The worst now abounds
Slaveship
Sickship
Dying to go home
Slaveship
Sharkship
Sharks circling the ship
Slaveship
Graveship.

GERMS
By Kaylah Hillery
Muldoon, Grade 4

Inside this mouth
are wee little germs
disgustingly decaying
creating cavities
driving around in their germobiles
all day long
protecting themselves
in the crooks and crannies
of your teeth
destroying teeth, breath,
and gums
they scatter around
crying
ALL IS LOST
you gargle
whoosh whoosh
they spread like a cold
hollering
FLOOD.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF HAIR
By Iziah Sherman-Newsome
Muldoon, Grade 1/2
Loose like curly fries
Wavy like the ocean
Thin as paper
Straight as a board
Braided with twists and curves
like this and that
All over my head
Funk master style
is what I like best
because it’s…
me.

“Northern Lights Streaming…”
By Ashley Hays
Scenic Park, Grade 3

Northern Lights streaming
In the sky like a waterfall
Falling off a mountain.

MAD
By Rosie Mancari
Family Partnership, Grade 3

Mad
grumpy
ferocious
I can’t take it any more!
Sister biting
brother screaming
mom yelling
dad not paying attention
running to my room
mad!
