ODE TO SNOWBOARDING
By Blake Steenhoven
Lake Hood, Grade 6
My mind
racing as I slip into my bindings,
riding the chairlift
high above the ground.
The wind
blowing my hair freely
as I cruise down the hill.
Nerves twitch
but Im addicted to adrenaline.
Nearing the jump,
heart pounding,
feeling the ground angle up
under my board,
Sailing, rising higher then ever.
HOW TO BE A SWAN
By Genevieve Carr
Lake Hood, Grade 4
Fly high.
Eat fish.
Wear white downy feathers.
Float in the pond
Lay yellow eggs.
Be beautiful!
HOW TO BE THE TREES
By Kelsey Saakvitne
OMalley, Grade 6
To be the trees
You have to have long, bony arms.
You have to whine and sigh
All night long.
You have to claw
and bite the moon,
As if trying to bring it down,
And you have to slowly
dance in the wind.
GUITAR
By Grant Barras
Baxter, Grade 6
He played so well,
sitting next to me,
he played so well
strumming stings
that plucked my soul
he played so well
he made me think,
how can a man that good
be sitting next to me? I sat there
quietly flowing with his harmonies.
He glanced at me, tears blinding
as he kept playing, strumming,
his high pitch catching me-Ging!
I stayed
stunned
listening.
I wondered
why I couldnt hear before
the guitar wasnt my instrument
that man strumming melodies
reciting history
telling stories
he turned to me, whispered,
your turn, my son.
TESTING
By Shelby Werstlein
Muldoon, Grade 4
the test is a monster waiting
to eat my brain,
scratch paper is my shield,
my number 2 pencil my sword,
I will attack by filling in the bubbles
heavy and dark.
